“Winning victory at the end of those difficult days...” - Suleyman Valiyev

“Of course, the 44-day war is etched forever in the memory of everyone who took part. Even though six years have passed, I still remember those days very clearly, down to the smallest detail.”

CBC Sport commentator Suleyman Valiyev said this in an interview with Fanat.az.
The journalist, who swapped the commentary box for the trenches during the 44-day Patriotic War and fought in that sacred war, shared his memories with Fanat.az on Victory Day:
“Those days were filled with so many different emotions, from the call-up to the day we returned home. Anxiety, fear, joy, sadness, pride. We experienced every emotion a person could possibly feel.
My wartime service took me through various parts of Qarabag: Jabrayil, Fuzuli, Khojavand, Khojaly and Lachin. These days, when I go there myself or hear about fellow citizens travelling freely to those lands, I feel a strange mix of emotions. Back then, the fighting there never let up. We had grown used to living under artillery fire, on the ground, out in the open. Winning victory at the end of those difficult days gave each of us a feeling unlike any other. Yet as the years pass, you come to understand more clearly the significance of that event, that victory, and its place in history. I deeply regret that so many of our brothers who bore the burden of that war did not live to see these days or experience the joy of victory.
I hope our people will never again face an ordeal like war. War is the greatest tragedy that can befall a person.”
